Low Temperature Alcohol and Chilled Water Modifications
The primary purpose of this project was to replace the existing IMS and chilled water delivery system used for beer and tank temperature control in the Diageo brewery at St. Francis Abbey in Kilkenny.
Initially an extensive survey of the current facility was undertaken together with a HAZOP analysis. This was to assess the possible risks involved for both health and safety and production during implementation of the proposed drain down and changeover, which was required to be completed within a 72 hour window for the IMS and 32 hour window for the chilled water.
IMS delivery system
The existing multiple pump IMS delivery system was replaced with two 300m3/hr pumps run on a duty and duty assist basis tied into a new distribution header. Control was achieved through VSD’s and a constant pressure measurement reacting to the cooling demand at any one time within the brewery.
Chilled Water System Upgrade
The existing multiple pump Chilled water delivery system was replaced with two 300m3/hr pumps run on a duty/Standby basis. Control was achieved through VSD’s and a constant pressure measurement reacting to the cooling demand.
All KPI’s for this project were achieved within the time scales which included

2. Cooling rates
3. Reduced energy costs
4. Improved maintenance capability.
