For too long the constraints of budget and deadlines have driven project outcomes. The zero approach to health and safety, whilst admirable and achievable, can create silos, undue stress and impacts everybody on the project.
Creating a community-based approach, whereby all stakeholders on a project are involved working collaboratively for the greater good of all, provides the best environment for safety.
Construction still suffers from some of the highest levels of suicide, metal health problems and life expectancy. Zero harm is essentially a short-term goal which sometimes does not take into account the long-term impact of working on projects. A stakeholder approach based on care and respect provides a framework for both a zero approach and better health.
